Understanding Dental Procedures – What to Anticipate at the Dentist

Your teeth are essential not just for smiling and saying “cheese,” but also for chewing, digesting food, and enhancing your appearance. Proper dental care, including brushing, flossing, and regular dentist visits every six months, is crucial. Although visiting the dentist can be intimidating, knowing what to expect during a typical appointment can ease your concerns. Here, we’ll discuss common dental procedures such as fillings, root canals, and crowns, along with other treatments so you’re prepared for your next visit.

Most dental appointments begin with a consultation where the dentist evaluates the health of your teeth and gums. This often involves reviewing your X-rays and examining your mouth with a mirror and small tools to check for pockets or gaps between teeth. If you have any concerns or questions, this is the ideal time to address them.

Depending on your X-ray results, your dentist may schedule an exam. During this exam, the hygienist will use scalers to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Since bacteria in plaque and tartar contribute to tooth decay, their removal helps prevent cavities. The hygienist will also polish and floss your teeth, and may apply fluoride treatment to strengthen them.

After the examination, the dentist will discuss any findings and plan future visits. If no issues are detected, you’ll leave with a clean, polished smile. Routine cleanings and exams are crucial for prevention, but sometimes more extensive treatments are necessary. If a cavity is discovered, the dentist will numb the area, remove the decayed tooth structure, and fill it with a material that resembles your natural tooth.

For cracked or broken teeth, the dentist might need to perform a root canal to prevent further damage and save the tooth, especially if the crack is deep.

If you notice signs of wear or aging on your teeth, the dentist might recommend dentures. Dentures effectively replace missing or damaged teeth, and the dentist will take impressions to ensure a set that looks and feels natural.
